The change gives this home two electric heating sources: the heat pump for primary heating and electric resistance heat for supplemental or backup operation when the system calls for it. In cooling mode, the heat pump also handles the home’s air conditioning.
Furnace repair or replacement? Start with the actual problem
An older furnace does not automatically need replacement. If your furnace is not turning on, blows cold air, makes repeated clicking sounds or struggles to move air, the first step is a diagnosis. California HEEHRA: The program has offered heat pump HVAC rebates of up to $8,000 for qualifying low-income households and $4,000 for qualifying moderate-income households. However, TECH Clean California currently reports single-family funding fully reserved statewide and new single-family income verification applications closed. Do not count this money toward a new installation unless the program confirms eligibility and approves the required reservation. An installation completed before reservation approval does not qualify retroactively.
Federal tax credit: The IRS states that the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit covered qualifying improvements through December 31, 2025. The former heat pump credit of up to $2,000 should not be advertised as available for a new 2026 installation.
